Organic plant shade!

Thanks to nature! :)

Last weekend went back again to my hometown. Saw some of my Lycopodium squarrosum changed to yellowish in color.. Oh! They exposed to much sunlight even placed them under my plant shade. I used the wrong plant net for them.

At last, for the fast solution, the coconut's leaves is my choice. Got this idea when saw some of the coconut's leaves give extra shade to my orchids.

Nah..now I having an ORGANIC SHADE!

F.O.C and easy!

Lycopodium nummularifolium

Hi Friends..

Especially to all fern lovers, here I share with you my collection of Lycopodium nummularifolium. In Pahang state, an aborigins called this fern allies as 'Sisik Naga'.

From observation, my collection consist 2 varieties of L.nummularifolium.....classified them as 'soft stem' and 'hard stem'.

Currently, I'm having 10 pots 'soft stem' L.nummularifolium and a pot the 'hard stem'. And..so sorry, they're not for sale. In period of propogating them until 100 pots especially the 'hard stem' type.

Growing tip:

  • 50% shade
  • organic fertilizer is the best.
  • media - 100% Sphagnum moss.
  • propogation same as other Lyco.

Cat's Tail

Lycopodium squarrosum. Malaysian people called it Cat's Tail. Enjoy the GREEN!

For details, click here , but sorry guys, its in Malay.

Lycopodium dalhousianum

Friends,

Here the rare exotic fern allies from Malaysia! Known as Lycopodium dalhousianum. Also popular as Blue Fern. For local people in Pahang state ( 1 of Malaysia state ), they called it Ekor Kuda ( Horse tail ).

This lyco can reach 4 meters long. I propogate my L. dalhousianum through stem cutting and clump division. If you grow it through stem cutting, need to wait about 5 to 6 months to see the keiki. And yes, stem cutting technique take a long time but it will give you more plants in a period of time. Refer to my graphic article about this technique here.

Clump division easier than stem cutting. But, you need to sacrifice your big beauty clump into a several small clumps. Every division should have minimum 2 stems to guarantee your success.

For media, I used only 100% Sphagnum moss to grow all of my lycos. At the surface of the media I grow a living moss for nature look.

I feed my lycos with seaweed based fertilizer. Also another organic fertilizers. Becareful if you feed them with chemical fertilizer, never overdose! Or it will burn your plant root.

L.dalhousianum need 50% sunlight to grow well and will give you healthy leaves. Usually silverish green color.

Currently, I have 10 pots of L.dalhousianum. I wish to multiply my 'Horse tail' until 100 pots. End of this year, if no problem with disease infection to my stem cutting, I'm sure will have about another 20 pots of L.dalhousianum. And, all of them is NOT FOR SALE. That's why the TBV: Private Conservation Centre built for.

FAQ about growing Lycopodium

The tips is based on my experience growing Lycopodium about 7 years in Malaysia.

1. What is the best media for Lycopodium?
You can use several media like;

a. 1 : 1 : 1 of perlite, peat moss and charcoal
b. 100% sphagnum moss (my favourite media)
c. 1: 1 of coconut husk and perlite
d. 1:1:1 of perlite, charcoal and sphagnum moss

The suitable media will depend on your microclimate and watering habit. For me, in Central of Malaysia, I love to use with 100% high grade of sphagnum moss.

2. How often to water your Lycopodium?
Depend on your media. By using 100% sphagnum moss, I water my Lycos in alternate day.

3. How often to fertilize your Lycopodium?
Once a month with high Nitrogen organic fertilizer. I feed my Lycos with foliar and powder form fertilizer.

4. How about the disease?
In my collection, I always have a problem with Fusarium aka 'Fish Egg Fungus'.

5. Pot or driftwood, which one better?
Driftwood will give your Lycos like in nature .. but it will effect your watering schedule. Mine, I grow them in plastic pot, its seem they love it very much.

6. Light?
The best condition is 50% sun light. It will give you the best green color.
